Concerto Competition Studio Class!

Today in studio class you were the judges.  The goal of this exercise is to

1) simulate and encourage fear and paranoia in the contestants, a.k.a your studio-mates

and 2) to let the rest of you experience power!!  raw! unadulterated!! power!! Moo hahaha

Seriously though, this was a useful exercise in preparation for the real Paranov Competition of which 7 of our studio are doing next week.  Thanks to EmilyChanaynay and Ryan for tabulating the results.  I am going to post each person's comments  as a separate comment to this post, then I'd like the contestant in question to first comment about how you thought you did, and what you thought went wrong or could have gone better.  In doing this you may be surprised at your perception of the performance versus the "people's perception."

Also, by looking at the rankings of 9 different judges you see evidence that individuals disagree, and that different factors affect different people differently. Do not dispute the validity of the previous sentence, I am your PERFESSOR....

remember what we talked about in class, how when you judge a multi-instrument/piece competition, many factors are in play:  the "wow" factor sometimes being the least.  I tend to look for the most finished and most convincing performance of that particular work regardless of difficulty, and also for the most marketable.  Based on THAT, I give the following rankings.

Mozart Sinfonia Concertante comments:

-Very Different Vibratos
-Tempo was a bit fast
-Great Intonation
-Musicality/Ensemble Good
-More Assertion in VLA
-Good phrasing, some ensemble issues, could use a bigger sound and more leading from the viola
-Viola could lead more
-Be Careful how you make eye contact with violin, I think should be shorter or less
-Ensemble issues, not a very blended sound
-MORE VIOLA!
-You both play very well together
-Good intonation overall
-Very in tune
-Could have more feelings
-Very good timing
-Make this Piece more exciting by:
-Connecting more, look at each other. You are too buried in your music
-More Dynamic Contrast
-Better Phrasing; be dramatic, take more time

-Be more soloistic, connected
-Really nice sound, great phrasing and confidence, beginning could have more energy/ intensity
-Clarity in a few spots
-Nice phrasing, ends need more attention
-2nd mvt. Too slow
-Careful not to push the sound/intonation
-You sound great
-Good intonation and contrast between movements
-Very well played
-Remember you are a soloist-Project!
-Tone is great!
-Maybe work on the shape, 2nd movement was gorgeous

Schnittke Concerto Comments:
-Amazing, your double stops were so in tune!
-This piece is awesome and you played it very well!
-I liked how much feeling you put into the piece, it really made the piece
-Some parts less stable than others, vary vib. Speed more
-Make melodic parts sexier!
-need more delineation between sections, I got confused

Bartok Concerto Comments:
-Nice phrases, but sound needs to be much bigger to be heard over the orchestra, also some intonation issues
-Note issues, phrasing ok
-I liked your opening, need more contrast throughout piece
-Need more sound, I think is going to be very good if you work hard everyday for 1 more week
-Way too tame, this piece should be much more exciting than the way you played it
-Not too much rubato in the first half page it should be moving forward to the precipitato. Sustain melodic parts, be a drama queen in the triplet section

Bruch Romanze Comments:
-Try tapering ends of section, using vibrato and bow, memorization
-Take time/ dynamic nuance, great intonation/slides
-More color and character changes
-MEMORIZE!
-Can help more expression with better bow speed
-Nice sound, good intonation, be careful with the end of phrases
-Memory is so close! nice sound throughout, nice sound
-Amazing sound! needs more vibrato, especially at the end of phrases, use it to help you phrase

-Nice sound be careful at the ends of phrases don’t clip. Also, could use more variety of sound
-Improved a lot, be careful with making faces
-Nice sound!
-Beautiful, be careful not to crunch, don’t press so much
-I want your vibrato!, more contrast, softer sections with more life

Hindemith Concerto Comments:
-Great opening, strive for the same amount of comfort for whole piece
-Great opening!, good bow control, great acting!
-You seem much more confident, just work on your endings of notes and sections
-You look much more relaxed, I like the use of your body
-Biggest issue is rhythmic accuracy, usually pushes ahead
